Quantitative data can be measured and documented with numbers. Additionally, quantitative data can be represented as quantities. On the other hand, qualitative data is not measured with numbers, but it is represented by qualities. For example, I use quantitative methods to conduct my PhD research because I like working with counts and measures.

Sophocles’ play Antigone presents us with three different types of women: Antigone, the strong-willed protagonist; Ismene, the weak sister of Antigone; and Eurydice, wife of Creon. Each of these characters’ personalities, lifestyles, and choices directly affects the character’s mortality. The women characters in Antigone show great contrast, the most prominent being life and death. By analyzing the female characters, it can be seen that those who die, Antigone and Eurydice, share certain aspects that the survivor, Ismene does not; they are opposites of each other in nearly every way. The first opposite found, strong versus weak, plays a prominent role in this play. Antigone’s role within the play is much stronger than Ismene’s or Eurydice’s on various occasions. Antigone never fears Creon and his laws, and openly defies them, twice. Upon being caught in the act, Antigone does not hide from what she’s done, she confesses to it, “Yes, I confess; I will not deny my deed,” (Greene 487 pp 198). Antigone has a stronger familial bond with her brother, whom she believes deserves a proper burial, than her sister, Ismene, who refuses all participation in the unlawful act. After Creon has caught Antigone, he calls on Ismene, falsely assuming her participation in the illegal burial, and asks if she did it, Ismene replies “I did it, yes-if she will say I did it…,” (Greene 590 pp 202). Only when Ismene fears her sister has told on her, does she show that she has the potential to be a strong character, like Antigone. Eurydice, who is not as prominent in the play as many other characters, is also portrayed as weaker than Antigone. Eurydice, being Creon’s wife stands behind him in all that he does. She supports him in his decisions, until his actions lead to the suicide of their son, Haemon. This puts Eurydice over the edge, at which point she kills herself. Both Antigone and Eurydice share the mental and physical strength to kill themselves for their loved ones. Similar to strength, but just as important in this play, is bravery. Antigone’s show of bravery throughout this play defies gender roles of her time, and makes her death meaningful. Other characters in this play kill themselves because someone they love dies, but Antigone’s death, though by her own hand, was caused by Creon and his misguided laws. The Chorus in the play praises her choices by saying, “Yes, you go to the place where the dead are hidden, but you go with distinction and praise…it was your own choice and alone among mankind you will descend, alive, to that world of death,” (Greene 878-884 pp 213). Antigone’s choices show her strong will, and continuous love for those she has lost. Antigone willingly gives her life to ensure her brother gets to the underworld safely, and once she does that she kills herself to be with her family in the after life. The character of Ismene shows no sign of this bravery, and this conformity to Creon’s way of thinking preserves her life. She continuously takes on the common subordinate role women usually are portrayed in, saying such things as “…You ought to realize we are only women, not meant in nature to fight against men…” (Greene 70-71 pp 183) and “…bury him in secret; I will be silent, too,” (Greene 98 pp 184). Ismene does all she can to try to convince her sister to change her mind. The women in this play share a commonality in their love for their family, but Antigone is the only one who is not afraid to prove it. Family is, not only the leading cause of death of women within this play, but the basis for this entire play. It is Antigone’s lineage that began all of this chaos in the first place, as stated by Ismene, “…Consider sister how our father died…how he himself struck out the sight of his two eyes…Then, mother and wife…did shame violently on her life…Third, our two brothers…Each killed the other…,” (Greene 56-65 pp 183). Antigone proves her undying love to the dead members of her family by taking her own life, and in a way disowning Ismene for not doing the same. Ismene fears the punishment associated with burying her brother, and therefore refuses to do anything which would endanger her life. After Ismene’s “confession,” Antigone refuses to let Ismene have any false glory, “Justice will not allow you what you refused and I will have none of your partnership” (Greene 592 pp 202). Similar to Antigone, Eurydice gives up her life for a loved one. The bond between mother and son is much stronger than that of husband and wife, and it’s this bond that leads Eurydice to take her own life once she hears that her son has taken his own life. A character known as Second Messenger recounts her death, “The queen is dead. She was indeed true mother of the dead son. She died, poor lady, by recent violence upon herself,” (Greene 1358-1360 pp 229). With whom these women align themselves seems to be a deciding factor in their life or death within the play. There are the women who, in the end, align themselves behind Creon and his rule, and those who believe in other forces. Antigone goes against Creon’s laws, believing that since Creon will eventually die, his proclamation (concerning her brother’s burial) holds no power. She thinks only the Gods have enough power to declare who should be buried and who shouldn’t saying, “…it was not Zeus that made the proclamation; nor did Justice, which lives with those below, enact such laws as that, for mankind…,” (Greene 494-496 pp 198). This belief eventually leads to the actions which cause Antigone’s death in the play. Her sister, however, believes Creon is right and shouldn’t be defied, saying “…we are ruled, by those who are stronger…,” (Greene, 72 pp 183). By being obedient to the King of Thebes, Ismene preserves her life, but at what cost, if everyone she loves dies in the process? The exception to this is Eurydice, whose character isn’t explored deep enough to discover her true feelings, but she did align herself with her son by the end of the play, killing herself to be with him. The two female characters who did not believe faithfully in Creon died, while the subordinate female survived. Being a woman in and of itself plays a big part in the morality of these female characters. According to the website Ancient Greek Civilizations: the Women of Athens, marriage is a right of passage for girls to become women, (“The Women of Athens”). Eurydice is the only married women within the play, leaving us to believe Antigone and Ismene are still girls. However, in death, Antigone says herself that her “…husband is to be the Lord of Death,” (Greene, 877 pp 213). Jana Shopkorn, who created a website entitled “‘Til Death Do Us Part: Marriage and Funeral Rites in Classical Athens,” says that “Death before marriage signifies a marriage with the underworld,” (Shopkorn). Following this line of thinking, the only woman who survives was in fact a girl, and being married was a curse, of sorts, for Eurydice and Antigone. Through the analysis of the only 3 females in Sophocles’ play Antigone, we discover a wide array of contrasting characteristics. The dynamics between these characters provides insight into their mortality within the play. The two female characters that die in this play, Antigone and Eurydice, share many similarities that Ismene, the sole female survivor does not possess. The day to day struggling that Jacob faces is a true picture in which the older man is abandoned at a nursing facility by his family members. This is in direct opposite to the life that Jacob undergoes while at the Benzini. This is a theme of male discrimination in their older age where they are viewed as a nuisance to their society, and are not treated as human beings but as patients and which is a direct manifestation of the current world. At the age of ninety three, Jacob Jankowski still remembers the memories, most of which gender based and which he was subjected to. He remembers vividly as a young man how he was tossed by fate to a train that was rickety. He still remembers a world that was full of clowns and freaks, coupled with pain and wonders as well as passion and anger. After college he was ushered in a world that stares in discriminatory, that has irrational, narrow, rules, with complex life, and an equally complex death. To Jacob, the circus was a prove of the brutality and discrimination subjected to the male. He was actually there because he was simply not lucky, was penniless and orphaned. Before joining the “ship of fools” train he had no direction in life. Old McGuinty foolishly tells Jacob that he “used to carry water for the elephants,” (Gruen 46). Jacob sees this statement as an open lie and an insult to him. In deep memory of Rosie, Jacob fearlessly asks back, “Do you have any idea how much an elephant drinks?” (Gruen 47). This connects readers who see the discrimination and lack of respect that the old Jacob is subjected to and are likely to ask, Do you have an idea at how much an old man can remember and love? Jacob is the only character who is morally upright and in reward he is forced to spend most of the time broken, beaten, bleeding, hungover, concussed, bleeding and swollen. He is frustrated because in his old age he is trapped and discriminated upon. As a young college student with little world experience, Jacob is discriminated and ridiculed by his peers. But he later gradually gains respect after being promoted to be in charge of animal management. This in itself reveals how humanity is cunning and how Jacob is discriminated as a man and only gains recognition after the promotion. As an animal manager he meets several characters including Walter, who become his friend only after some time. Other characters he encounters are Barbara, Blackie and Earl who are known to “redlight” human being. “Redlighting” here means that they throw people off the train. He also meets Uncle Al who is also a manager. Question 2 The narration occurs during the Great Depression where every person in the circus was blessed to get any work at all. Marlena, is a star, who had fallen in love with a wrong man. The man was good-looking and he owned the circus and had a broad mean streak. Rosie was a female elephant, who was a great gray hope, and was the new act that was destined to save the circus. The major problem with Rosie was that she was very poor in following simple instructions. There was a strong relationship of trust and love that emerged from the three, and which was viewed as their single and only hope for survival. In the movie Water for Elephants, the main characters in it provide the movie audience a journey that is very memory to human beings. The major issue in understanding any story is that the characters act out to declaration and accomplishment issues of the needs of human beings that they make the audience attentive. If there is a lesson to be learned this engagement provides a means in which the issue will remain in memory of the audience for long. When the characters in a story are introduced, authors and writers have to suggest that character will leave to the expectations of the issues that arise from the story. Jacob is the main character in the. Readers are subjected to about three months of Jacob’s life when he was twenty three as well as a few days as a ninety three year old man. His character is lovable human being who shares anything he has with anyone around him as a young man, but in older years he keeps most of the time to himself (Jamie 2007). Marlena is his lover of life, a lady whom he met while in the circus. Jacob and Marlena initially fight against each other in their love, but fortunes in life bring them to love and cherish one another for ever and even have children. Uncle Al is oe of the circus leader, who is a self-serving, cunning who brutally slaps and beats the animals and anyone on site at will just because he has the powers and no one can stop him. August is the lead trainer, who is characterized with brutality and most of the time misuses the animals he is supposed to train which includes the new elephant Rosie and any person who works under him. On the other hand he is sometimes very charming. Jacob creates a more careful relationship with August but he is unable to control advances to his wife Marlena. The actions of the characters are symbolic but a true reflection of the current world happenings. The oppressions that Jacob was subjected to is very much similar to the current affair happenings in the work place. The love affair between him and he wife of his boss rings bells and can be regarded as any wishful writing. The character of August was full of brutality and that of Uncle Al equally cunning and a very poor person to relate with. Question 3 The character most identified with is Jacob. The is made possible because the nation itself is by Jacob and he speaks of his own experiences as a vet doctor and the entire experiences, good and bad including the love affairs he passed through. There is more drama as he narrates about his experiences at the nursing home which gives a picture on how he old people are mistreated in such homes. There are two experiences from the book which are equally interesting. One is the brutality subjected to the animals and human beings including Jacob by August and Uncle Al as well the old age days of Jacob in a nursing home, who is regarded as a patient and not as a human being. Another episode is the falling in love of Jacob with his wife’s boss as an animal vet. He becomes close with a guided relationship with August and develops a close love relationship with his wife Marlena, who is the most outgoing character. Despite her marriage to August, Marlene finds favor in another man Jacob whom together they get a child. All of this is coupled with Jacob’s gradually growing relationship to Rosie a very complex elephant. It leaves everyone wondering what will happen if August discovers this illicit relationship and leaves everyone reading more to know what happened at the end. There were no characters in Water for Elephants that was seemed authentic in my personal experience.

Your report for this lab needs to contain all sections, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Literature Cited, but there is no species list for this report. In your Introduction, you should introduce the topic of soil properties and then narrow your focus towards our specific study.
