I was very excited in the beginning to do this assignment because of my illness I deal with insomnia issues. I have taken medications for this problem and they were not very effective and the ones that were had so many side effects that I was afraid to take them. So the idea of a natural sleep aid seemed like the idea method of dealing with my sleep problems. During the first three nights of the sleep study I went to sleep around 11:05 p. m.
This time was averaged out from an 11:00 p. m. time on the first day, on the second day I went to sleep at 11:15 p. m. On day three I went to sleep at 11:00 p. m. It took a mean of 18 minutes for me to go to sleep during this three day period before trying the alternate nostril breathing routine. After trying the alternate nostril breathing routine the average time recorded was thirty three minutes. Even though the exercises seem to calm me down from the events of the day, it took me longer to fall asleep. My average waking times was also recorded during this study.
I usually wake up around 7:00 a. m. every morning. I get up to help my wife prepare for work and get my son and daughter ready for school. Since this is the summer vacation for the kids, it is not necessary for me to wake up at 7:00 a. m. every morning. However my average wake up time during this three day period was 7:05 a. m. The average wake up time after the alternate nostril breathing routine was 7:00 a. m. The study measured the rate of restfulness during sleep on a scale of 1 to 10. Ten being fully rested and one meaning not rested at all.
My scores reflected that I was less rested after doing the routine than I was the three days prior when I had not done the alternate nostril breathing routine. The first three days of the study my rate of restfulness was a 4. 3. After trying the breathing routine the average rate of restfulness was.
The mean of sleep time recorded for the first three days of the study was 7 hours and 3 minutes. The average sleep times for the second three nights were 6 hours sleep each night. The sleep study revealed that for the first three nights I awoke 4. times a night and I stayed awake for 1 hour and 5 minutes each time I awoke. On the night I done the alternate nostril breathing routine I awoke 3. 6 times a night and stayed awoke for 1 hour and 26 minutes each time.
So after carefully examining my data tracking sheet it was clear that there was no change in my sleep habits and the alternate nostril breathing routine was not very effective as a sleeping aid. The changes that were recorded resulted in lower scores. I am not sure if the results of my study were interfered with because of the medications I take for a chronic illness.
Or just the fact remains that the alternate nostril breathing routine doesn’t work at all. The research is very clear that breathing exercises (e. g. pranayama breathing) can enhance parasympathetic (inhibit neural responses) tone, decrease sympathetic (excitatory) nervous activity, improve respiratory and cardiovascular function, decrease the effects of stress, and improve physical and mental health (Pal, Velkumary, and Madanmohan, 2004). The result of my research study is just as clear and dispels the claim that alternative nostril breathing works as a natural sleep aid.
I can see how this routine can be seen a helpful from a biological standpoint, alternate nostril breathing treatments regulate the body’s temperature, soothes the nervous system, cleanse the lungs and provides equal amounts of oxygen to both sides of the brain. (Ajmere R. 2010) There seem to be many benefits from alternate breathing, one would be the flow of oxygen helping the blood circulate better, therefore doing its job to cleanse the body. Pranayama breathing has been shown to positively affect immune function, hypertension, asthma, autonomic nervous system imbalances, and psychological or stress-related disorders.
