PHYSICS 5B UC Berkeley Physics Thermodynamics Fluids Waves and Optics Project.

Description: For your project for our Physics course, you will submit a written research review broadly related to our Physics topics, which include thermodynamics and matter, fluid mechanics, oscillating systems, waves—including sound andother mechanical waves as well as electromagnetic waves— and optics. Your review should summarize and synthesize multiple high-quality academic or popular sources, explaining how your topic relates to the laws of physics as explained in the Physics series. Imagine as your audience someone who has taken Physics and understood the concepts, but doesn’t necessarily know anything about your project topic. As you write your review, think about trying to answer some of following questions for your audience. What is the significance of this topic, either to our fundamental understanding of physics or in practical applications? What are the fundamental laws of physics or equations that govern the phenomema? What are the connections between your topic and what we learn about in our Physics course (thermodynamics, fluids, waves, and optics)? What is the history of experimental or theoretical research into your topic? What major breakthroughs, if any, have shaped our currentunderstanding of the topic? What are some open problems or unanswered questions related to the topic?Examples of high quality sources include textbooks, academic journal articles, popular sum- maries of scientific research in academic sources (for example, summaries or news articles in journals like Nature, Science, and PhysicalReview), popular accounts from reputable organizations like the American Physical Society (APS), NASA, the NIH, or universities (but try to avoid press releases from university communications offices), articles from high-qualitypopular science mag- azines (Quanta magazine is a good example; but be careful, there is a lot of bad popular science writing out there), and personal webpages or blogs of scientific researchers (again, be careful; even good scientists sometimes present idiosyncratic or non-mainstream views in their personal writings). You must avoid plagiarism. Write in your own words. Make sure to provide citations for any ideas or informationyou use that are not your own original work (any standard academic citation format will do). I strongly suggest that ifyou include any figures (diagrams, charts, graphs, or any other kind of visual presentation of information), that youmake them yourself and don’t just copy from one of your sources. If you do find it necessary to use a figure made bysomeone else, please make it clear where it came from and how to access the source you got it from.Obviously, this is only an introductory physics class, so I don’t expect that you will be able to digest and explain alldetails of your topic at the level of a working scientist. However, I do expect that, to the best of your abilities, you will put effort into understanding your chosen topic and explaining it clearly and accurately.Your project doesn’t necessarily need to include any equations or calculations, but including a small number of relevant equations—and explaining what they mean physically—will probablyimprove your review. If you do include equations, I would prefer that you typeset them, for example using the equation editor in Google Docs or Word, rather than handwriting them.I will grade your project holistically based on the following criteria (in no particular order):-Judicious selection and use of high quality references.-Synthesis of multiple high quality sources to present a coherent and accurate narrative about your topic-Clear, concise, and grammatical writing. -Demonstrating understanding of fundamental physical principles like conservation of energy, the second law of thermodynamics, the atomic model of matter, the superposition principle, the wave model of light, etc.-Connecting your chosen topic to our Physics course material, either broadly or specifically.-And in general, showing that you’ve put effort into researching and learning about your topic as well as writing, formatting, and proofreading your report.Formatting: Your writeup should be single-spaced and written in 12-point, serif font (like Times New Roman, Palatino, Georgia, etc.). There is nopage minimum or maximum, but a length of 3 to 5 pages seems about right to me. You can use any standard academic citation format. The follow is a list of ideas I came up with to help you in choosing a topic for your final project. You’re welcome to use one of the ideas listed here or to come up with your own. You definitely shouldn’t consider this list exhaustive; this is more like a brainstorm on my part. If you want to pick something not on this list, it might be a good idea to run it by me or your TA first to see if it would be a good fit for this project.(Note: I plan to add more detailed descriptions of each of these and say a little about how they connect to the course material.)-Thermodynamics and life•Phases of matter and phase transitions:•Brownian motion:•Black-body radiation:•Non-newtonian fluids:•Turbulence:•Shock waves:•Life at low Reynolds number:•Animal echolocation:•Human/animal hearing:•Seismology:•Meterology:•Ultrasound:-Gravity waves in water:-Gravitational Waves:•Fourier analysis:•Applications of electromagnetic radiation to medicine:•Optical aberrations:•Human/animal vision:•Applications of lenses/mirrors in optical instruments:-Michelson interferometers:I tried to give suggestions that don’t rely on you knowing anything from electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, or atomic physics. If have taken the course or you otherwise have exposure to these topics, there are a whole bunch of other things you might want to write about like lasers, plasmas, magnetic phases of matter, crystallography, superfluids, superconductivity, ferrofluids, etc., etc.Scientific writing resources: Here are a couple resources on scientific writing to help you out. These are mostly for working scientists writingpeer-reviewed research articles or proposals, so not all of this will apply to you. However, there is a lot of good generaladvice here that will help you improve your project. I’ll try to add more resources here as I come across them.UNC Chapel Hill Writing Center (https://writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/ sciences/)Duke Graduate School Scientific Writing Resource (https://sites.duke.edu/scientificwriting/

It stands for Thin Layer Chromatography. It’s a simple technique used by chemists in separation of Mixtures in addition to supporting the identification of the separated compounds by comparing the “Retention Factor” of the separated compound with that of a known compound. The TLC plate on which the Thin Layer Chromatography is performed is usually a sheet of glass, aluminum or plastic. It’s has a coat of adsorbent material ( known as stationary phase ) such as silica gel, alumina or cellulose. First step is application of the sample to the plate, then in a capillary action- the chemist draws the solvent up the plate. Separation occurs due to the different ascendance rates of analytes on the plate. Advantages of TLC over other types of chromatography Paper Chromatography TLC is faster than paper chromatography. It’s more sensitive to many substances. Its preparation is usually sharper. It requires smaller quantity of sample. Potential application of different types of reagents without causing damage to the plate. Column chromatography TLC has smaller apparatus It has more speed Previous points leads to cheaper over all procedure It provides easier measurement of the “Retention Factor”. The above advantages makes it more suitable for analytical purposes rather than separation purposes. Preparation of TLC plate To prepare the TLC plate, first we must mix a small quantity of an inert substance such as “calcium sulfate” with adsorbent substance like “Silica gel” and water. The second step is spreading this mixture on sheet of unreactive substance such as “glass” or “plastic”. The third step is activation of the plate that results from the previous procedures by heating it in an oven at 110oC for nearly half an hour. The adsorbent layer’s thickness depends on the purpose of TLC as in case of analytical purposes, it ranges from 0.1 to 0.25 mm. In case of preparative TLC it ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 mm. Technique A small amount of the sample’s solution is poured on the plate to cover about one centimeter high from the base. Then the plate is soaked in a convenient solvent like “Hexane” and put in a container that’s well sealed. Using capillary action, the solvent goes up the plate to meet the sample’s mixture which it helps to move up the plate and dissolves as well. Differences between rates of the compounds in the mixture are because each compound has different affinity to the adsorbent layer (stationary phase) from the other compounds and also each compound has different solubility in the mixture. If the solvent is changed, the compounds can be separated (using Retention Factor’s value). Applications of TLC in the Pharmaceutical field Thin-layer chromatography technique is used for separation of amino acids that are the main components of antibiotics, enzymes and hormones. TLC-UV spectrometry was used to determine salidroside in 8 Rhodiola species ( Rhodiola is a herb that has been used for long time for treatment of cold and flu symptoms in addition to relieving mental and physical stresses. In China, it’s recently considered as promising anti-aging drug in addition to having causative agent for improvement of athletic performance and enhancing memory). The combination of advanced chromatographic resolution of 2D-TLC with simple bioautography is used in discovering new natural products that are active against important fungal pathogens of plants. Thin-layer chromatography in addition to HPLC are used for the identification of “Pogostemoni herba” which is a crude drug and a Kampo medicines-component. TLC-colourimetric was used to estimate free and combined emodine, physcione and chrysophanol in Indian Rhubarb and it turned out to contain (0.07%)of free emodin of (0.08%) of C-glycosidic emodin, (0.30%) of O-glycosidic emodin, (0.40%) of free physcione, (0.18%) of O-glycosidic physcione, (0.17 %) of C-glycosidic physcione, (0.15%) of free chrysophanol, (0.06%) of O-glycosidic chrysophanol and (0.21%) of C-glycosidic chrysophanol. TLC-UV Densitometric method is used in Misai Kucing Capsules for Simultaneous Quantification of Sinensetin and Tetramethoxyflavone. TLC is used for determination of different compounds in analgesic tablets. TLC-densitometric procedure is used for determination of the contents of Plumbagin which is a naphthoquinone that acts as antimalarial , antimalarial , anticancer, cardiotonic and antifertilityaction. Quantitative Thin-Layer Chromatography is used for the determination of Propranolol in human plasma. Determination of Steroidal Alkaloid Glycosides using Thin-Layer chromatography Immunostaining. TLC is used to determine Phenytoin in pharmaceutical preparations and identify its Hydroxylated Urinary Metabolites. Isolation of antioxidants from Perilla frutescens var. acuta fruit is carried out using TLC. TLC- densitometric method is used to analyse artemisinin in the planlets of Artemisia annua L. TLC is used to detect as well as identify opiates in urine in addition to reveilind adultration in heroin. TLC-Densitometry is used in the Quantitative Analysis of Curcumin, Demethoxycurcumin and Bisdemethoxycurcumin in the Crude Curcuminoid Extract from Curcuma longa.

Ashford University Week 2 Chapter 4 Financial Forecasting Discussion

Ashford University Week 2 Chapter 4 Financial Forecasting Discussion.

I’m working on a accounting discussion question and need an explanation to help me study.

Week 2 – Discussion 1 Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 4: Financial Forecasting in your textbook. Before developing a pro forma income statement, one must first prepare a sales projection. Explain why this first step is so critical based on your reading. Then, review the quarterly report for Deere & Company you downloaded for the Week 1 Analyzing the Statement of Cash Flows discussion. Describe how it addresses the sales results, and then outline the issues this company faces regarding sales projections.Discussion 2Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 5: Operating and Financial Leverage in your textbook. As you explored in your textbook, financial leverage refers to the amount of debt used in the capital structure of a business. The degree of financial leverage measures the effect of a change in the earnings per share (EPS) of the company that occurs because of a percent change in the earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT).List some of the benefits and limitations of financial leverage when it comes to profitability. Then, explain the factors a company should consider when deciding which type of leverage plan (i.e., leveraged or conservative) it should follow.Guided Response: Review the posts from your classmates and respond to at least two. How did their list of limitations differ from yours? What does their analysis tell you about the role of financial leverage in making financial decisions? Each response should have a minimum of 400 words for each discussion.
