Writing Question
This will be a building-block assignment that will help you prepare for writing longer and more involved pieces. The goal here is to assess how well you can interview someone, select quotes from that interview and write them up in a proper format.
Interview someone who has a meaningful association with sports in some way. This could include an athlete or coach at a high school, college or professional level. It could also include someone who runs a sports bar, a student aide in the athletic department, a volunteer who umpires local little league games or anyone along those lines. If you find yourself needing to interview a fan, avoid people with common experiences, and seek out people that can bring a unique perspective to your interview. For example, instead of interviewing a freshman about his first experience at a WVU football game, you would want to find the fan who is 92 years old and has never missed a home game.
Once you have completed the interview, you need to write up a 1.5 page assignment in which you include a very basic lead and then tell the rest of the story in paraphrase-quote structure. You must write this in paraphrase-quote structure and in third-person format. Do not use “I” or “we” or “me” unless it is in a direct quote.

Bill Smith has been attending WVU football games for the past 88 years and calls himself the Mountaineers’ biggest fan.Smith said he first attended a home game when he was 5 years old and fell in love with the team immediately.“I had to recycle aluminum foil to get my nickel for my ticket,” he said. “It was an incredible feeling to be inside that stadium and I never wanted to be anywhere else.”Smith said although prices have gone up since his first game, he never thought twice about giving up his tickets.“I would rather die than miss a game,” he said. “You can’t put a price on love.”
