This is a management theory that considers the organization an open system comprising of interdependent and interrelated divisions that represent subsystems. The systems theory of management holds that the organization is a singular that comprises of several subsystems such as accounting, manufacturing, finance, marketing, and production among others (Teece, 2018). In this theory, the system together with its sub-systems is influenced by both external and internal factors. When the system is open, it means that it is open to receive various forms of inputs from other systems such as supplies from suppliers, information regarding the market and the industry, and raw materials. The systems theory just other management theories have several advantages and disadvantages.
One of the major advantages of the systems theory of management is that it focuses on the whole system rather than the subsystems. The theory assesses the system’s overall effectiveness which allows for the management to apply system concepts across the general organizational levels rather than focusing on the different department’s performance. Generally, the system theory helps managers study the functions and concepts of complex organizations (Gordon, 2021). Specifically, the theory uses a probabilistic approach rather than a deterministic one. However, the system theory is negatively attributed to as immaterial and vogue and proves to be difficult to be implemented in large and complex organizations. Additionally, the system does not contain the useful tools and techniques that managers require.
A systems theory approach can be applied in a situation where a manager wants to determine organizational behaviors. With the system theory, this is done by mapping the repeated behaviors and activities such as output, input, throughput, and the shared feedback between the organization and its external environment. Therefore, when managers want to trace an organization’s inputs behavior, they review the past input records and feedback between the organization and its suppliers which is a form of the theory system.

Acme, Inc., is a large industrial manufacturer with locations in several states. The home office, located in Springfield, employs a large contingent of white-collar
professionals who support Acme’s operations across the country.

solving, Acme would contract out for those services. With the company’s recent growth, the chief executive officer (CEO) decided to create a small new team at

going through a significant change in its operations and interpersonal conflicts were developing, Amil and Berl could collaborate to develop a strategy and
address the problem areas. Kerry and Lillith could work together, for example, with a group that was working to improve its manufacturing processes and
needed to learn new skills to ease the transition.
Internal Support was off to a rough start. Although the design appeared to meet a need for Acme, Carol’s phone did not ring very much. She was not sure what
the problems were, but her supposition was that either the CEO did not do a good job kicking off the new group, Carol’s marketing of their availability did not
strike a chord, or Acme leaders preferred the old way where outsiders came in, helped, and left, leaving no enduring memory of the problems they experienced.
As a result, this well-paid group was underutilized and bored. Whereas Carol thought she would be giving the team assignments out of the office, working with
other departments, she gave assignments such as creating flow charts of internal processes, writing policy, and designing charts and spreadsheets. The staff, all
capable professionals in their fields, viewed this as busy work. Carol considered it her best effort to keep some activity going in the office. Several of the staff
asked for funds to attend off-site conferences and training, but Carol said the money for that would not be available until the staff had proven their value to the
One morning at work, Carol hastily called a team meeting. A family situation was requiring her to relocate, and she would be leaving immediately. She was
moving to live near her parents and Acme had a facility in that area. She had cleared it with the CEO that Acme would find a job for her at the new location so
she could work her last few years until retirement. Carol announced that Ron would replace her as the Internal Support supervisor.
Ron was a new executive with Acme. Ron had an MBA and some prior work experience. At age 32, this would be his second Acme assignment. Ron’s previous

After the meeting with Carol and before Ron arrived, the staff talked among themselves. The general consensus was that Ron’s appointment to their staff was

needed Amil’s expertise, Kerry could go directly to Amil for assistance. Ron required that all such collaboration requests be funneled through him.
Ron required weekly statistical reports of staff activities, including phone calls received, emails received/sent, dates/times/durations of meetings, and hours
spent in preparation and active work.
The staff wanted to develop a marketing plan for their services so the rest of Acme would know of their skills and availability. Ron indicated that the CEO did not
want increased marketing, that the brochures and posters around the building were enough. According to Ron, the CEO was happy that the staff was available,
and he would work on increasing their utilization. The staff did not note any increase in publicity or the frequency with which their services were requested.
One day when Ron was out of the office, the Internal Support staff met informally. In summary, here is what each of them said:
Berl: “I’m good. I understand that the rest of you want to get more engaged and do something productive. I would like to be productive too, but I don’t
see that changing. I’m two years from having enough in my 401(k) to retire, so I’ll just coast until then.”
Siri: “I am livid! Carol sold me a bill of goods. I’m a lawyer; I passed the bar; I’m ready to do something. This has to change or I’ll have to go!”
Amil: “I love Acme. The company has been good to me. I got a great start here and was really happy to come back. I’m working my old contacts under
the radar to see if I can drum up some business for us. Until then, I’ll keep reading and studying to stay sharp. Hopefully this will turn around soon.”
Peter: “Ron is killing us. Carol was bad enough, but at least she didn’t throw this stupid ‘measure everything’ stuff at us. I’m going to email the CEO
directly, and soon, if we can’t get through to Ron that we need to generate more business and stop filling out meaningless internal paperwork.”
Lillith: “I don’t have anything against Ron. He is new and trying to make his mark here. He’ll grow out of this rookie foolishness soon. Hopefully, he’ll get

My hero is The selected Eastern Hero from the approved list is Ronin. Ronin is a Japanese term used with reference to a masterless Samurai upon the death or loss of privilege by his master. Asano Takumi-no-Kami was a Master to approximately three hundred men. However, an alteration between Takumi-no-Kami and a powerful royal official Kira Kozuke-no-Suke resulted in Takumi’s death through ritualistic suicide. Takumi’s death rendered his men Ronin and forty seven of the three hundred took an oath to avenge the death of their master by killing Kira. Due to the high level of security Kira was accorded as a powerful royal official and knowledge that his Ronin might avenge him, Kira increased his security and sent spies to watch over Takuma’s men. For over one year, Takuma’s Ronin lived normal lives as tradesmen while their leader Oishi led a purposeless life to distract attention. This enabled Takuma’s men to blend in easily and get information about his whereabouts. When Kira was sure that there was no danger, he let his safety guard down and Takuma’s Ronin attacked Kira’s residence, overpowered his men and killed him. They then cut his head and took his head as sacrifice to their master’s grave. The forty seven men were tried and sentenced to death through the ritualistic Seppeku (Tucker, 2018).
The typical western Hero archetype to Ronin is Achilles. Achilles was a Greek soldier and served in Menalaus’ army and his involvement in the Trojan war was to avenge Menalaus after Paris eloped with his wife Hellen (Michealakis, 2007). Just like Ronin, Achilles killed Hector the Trojan prince before he was later on killed. The main difference between Achilles and Ronin is that while Ronin committed honour suicide, Achilles was killed by an enemy. The other difference is the location of their deaths whereby Ronin died before court officials while Achilles died in a battle field. It is also worth noting that Ronin succeeded in their revenge mission hence were contended while Achilles did not succeed in in his revenge mission and died discontented.
I can relate to the archetypical hero Achilles on the basis of parental efforts to ensure one leads a fulfilling life. According to a seer, Achilles would die young in battle and his mother sought to prevent this by burning his body with ambrosial ointment to rid him of physical vulnerabilities and dipped him in river Styx to confer him with god-like invulnerability. In the same manner, my parents have invested in my education to ensure my success. The ability to relate to this hero is not pegged on culture but rather parental love and sacrifice (Michealakis, 2007).
My selected Eastern hero, Ronin teaches us about the value of loyalty and sacrifice as human beings. The forty seven Ronin were extremely loyal to Takuma and saw the urge to sacrifice their lives in honoring their master.
