GLB-301: GLOBAL ISSUES AND SOCIETY Final Project—Summary and Integration

GLB-301: GLOBAL ISSUES AND SOCIETY Final Project—Summary and Integration.

FINAL PROJECT

In this final project, you will be asked to synthesize different parts of your own previous work as well as to integrate your work with the work of others. You will accomplish this in a paper of 2000 to 2500 words (with a typical font and spacing this will be approximately 8 to 10 pages). Your paper should consist of three sections:

  1. In the first section you will integrate your understanding of your own global villager with an understanding of other villagers.
  2. In the second section you will analyze two global issues in context and examine the connections between them. You will also consider how the issues would be experienced by different global villagers.
  3. Finally, in the third section, you will take what you have learned and describe how these gains have changed you as a global citizen.

Your paper should be well developed and convey your understanding of the concepts studied in this course. When referring to sources, be sure they are properly cited and referenced, using either APA or MLA formatting consistently. Finally, your paper should be organized, coherent, and unified; it should also be free of spelling and grammatical errors. If you need help in writing such a paper, take a look at The Writing Center: University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Section 1: Living in the Global Village

In Lessons 1 through 9 you were asked to write about one person in the global village, describing this individual in Lesson 1 and then telling how this particular person was affected by each of the seven global challenges in Lessons 2 through 8. You were asked to comment on the human rights of this villager in Lesson 9.

  1. Throughout this course you have been asked to look at the world from the perspective of the person you represent in the global village. What is the nature of your personal “worldview,” and how do you think it is like or different from that of the person you represent in the global village?

Please review the global villager postings of two students who represent individuals in two continents other than the one in which your villager resides (for example, if your villager was from Asia, you could select one other person from Africa and one from Europe). In some detail, tell how your global villager is both similar to and different from the other two villagers that you

Observation Collaboration

1. Please discuss different types of behavioral biases, and how they impact investment decisions, please include at least three Observation Collaboration.

Write a 500+ word initial post that includes these components: Observation Go to a public place and observe the people there for 25 minutes. What are the details of the location? Describe the general context (time of day, lighting, sounds, vibe/energy, etc.). Describe the people around you and their sociodemographic characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, gender/sex, socioeconomic status, etc.). -Went to the park around 1030am observed a group of mothers gathering together with their young children and then leave to go on a walk. The women and children were various races, and ethnicities from what I observed, with a majority of what looked like caucasian women there were a couple that looked Hispanic. I observed many people running by exercising, black men, white women and men, and then some riding by on their bicycles. I also observed an older white what seemed to be a couple bring their grandchildren (girls) seemed to be age 2-4 to the park to play. the children ran around going from slide to slide and the grandparents followed. Norms Identify two or more social norms that people engaged in at the public place. A norm is a social rule. There are many norms that help to frame how we are supposed to behave in our daily lives, one example is gender norms (what are social rules we follow to ‘be masculine’ and to ‘be feminine’); another example is standing in line (consider what would happen if you cut everyone in line at 8am in a Starbucks?). Concepts How do these norms you observed in the scene fit with sociological concepts and theories we’ve learned so far in class? Some examples of sociological concepts we’ve learned about so far include gender roles and emotional labor. (What is a “sociological concept?” They are all the concepts we’ve been learning each week in our course materials such as “socialization,” “norms” and “folkways.”) Reflection Reflect on your experience. How was this observing others through a sociological lens different from when you’ve “people watched” in the past? What perspectives do you think a sociologist can bring to our understanding of everyday human behavior? Engagement In any public scene, all of us will notice different things, and find different observations important or unimportant. In your peer responses, help one another identify sociodemographic characteristics, social norms, or sociological concepts that the classmate may not have noticed. Consider helping one another notice common themes in the types of public places you choose and your observations of people in those scenes. Writing Skills

Food item, cuisine, or invention

Food item, cuisine, or invention.

Food item, cuisine, or invention – you Can pick .

Once you have selected your topic, you will then do research to see how each of the following geographic concepts affects or is related to your topic:1. Regions 2. Cultural Landscape 3. Diffusion 4. Distance decay. The first two concepts are covered in the first chapter of your textbook. Diffusion is covered in Chapter 8, Section 2 (page 484). Distance decay refers to the fact that influence and interaction between locations decreases as the distance between them increases. As such, it has a significant influence on how things change as they diffuse away from their point of origin. Be sure to address these specific geographic terms and concepts in your work. You don’t need to address them in this order, but you do need to address all of them. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g. contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and other reliable resources to ensure you completely understand these concepts. You should be detailed in your treatment of these concepts – for instance, you should explain both how and why your choice varies by region, and how and why it has been affected by distance decay. Remember that geography, as an academic discipline, seeks to explain why things vary from place to place, not just describe how they do. You will complete this project in 3 separate assignments: an annotated bibliography, an outline, and your final presentation. In this assignment, you will complete your annotated bibliography. Completing the project in separate assignments allows you to work your way up to the final presentation, and provides opportunity for feedback along the way. ** For this project, you will assess three sources to include: *** 1) a complete citation for each source, 2) a summary of each source, and 3) an evaluation of each source.
